Leaving the EU is the most important event for farming in the UK in a generation. It gives the UK Governments at Westminster and in the devolved nations the opportunity to set their own agriculture policies and move away from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The CAP has set the farm support payment framework for the UK for decades, but it is a policy that was never developed for, and certainly did not deliver on, the needs of UK farmers and UK farm animals.

The RSPCA is broadly supportive of the Agriculture Bill as a whole. Although we have some concerns, we support the overall approach that the Bill takes in its move towards a new focus on using public money to encourage farmers and land managers to take action to improve farm animal welfare. The Bill forms a key part (though certainly not the entirety) of future UK farming policy, certainty about which is needed by the farming industry in these uncertain times more than ever.
