Wild Animals in Circuses
The RSPCA wants to see a complete end to the use of non-domesticated (wild) animals in circuses in Wales. Activities and practices can be prohibited under the rule-making powers of section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (AWA).
The RSPCA would support a phased in ban of wild animals in circuses as this would provide a framework for the industry, improve animal welfare and ensure Wales is not left lagging behind other countries with regards to animal welfare standards. We believe that the failure of Wales to do so undermines the progressive aims of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

No More Monkey Business
The RSPCA believe there should be a legal restriction on who is permitted to keep primates, such that only primates kept for the purposes of genuine conservation or sanctuary are permitted. This should be supported by a code of practice - such as the one introduced in England in 2010 - that promotes a high level of care, coupled with a licensing or registration scheme.
The National Assembly for Wales has the power to implement such regulations and Codes of Practice to protect primates in Wales.
