In April 2010, Defra’s Code of Practice for the Welfare of Privately Kept Non-Human Primates came into force in England (pictured left). The code provides private owners and keepers (i.e. excluding zoos and research facilities) with information on how to meet the welfare needs of primates, as required under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
We are conducting research to gauge the level of awareness of the code within local authorities and to assess whether the code has been used and if this has led to improvements in primate welfare. This information will help us to identify how we can best assist local authorities with issues involving privately-kept primates. It will also help us to inform the Government’s review of the code, due in 2015, and to make improvements in and raise awareness of primate welfare issues.
We would therefore be grateful if you could spare 5-10 minutes to download and complete this short questionnaire to assist us in our research and return it to wildlife@rspca.org.uk or by post to Wildlife Dept (Primates), RSPCA, Wilberforce Way, Southwater, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 9RS.
