The RSPCA inspectorate are called out to deal with tens of thousands of animal welfare and cruelty complaints each year. Some of the complaints that the Society receives often regard poor welfare standards of animals kept on allotments.
Whilst many animals are unsuitable for keeping on allotments there are others that can have their welfare needs adequately met, providing the allotment holder takes all the necessary measures required.
The downloadable guidance below which you can download aims to assist local authority allotment officers, allotment societies and allotment holders by providing them with clear and concise advice on animal needs, as well as recommendations on what other considerations should be made and useful contacts and references.
It is hoped that this guidance will help those involved in allotments to reduce the number of welfare issues associated with keeping animals on allotments occurring each year.
