Local government

Local authorities play a huge part in tackling animal welfare issues, from the collection of stray dogs to the implementation and enforcement of licensing conditions for animal establishments, as well as farm inspections.

Many local authorities have good working relationships with the RSPCA, usually through the inspectorate, the local branch or the Society’s Political Affairs team.

However the RSPCA’s aim is to try establish good working relationships with every one of the 351 local authorities across England and Wales and help to establish a consistent partnership approach to animal-related issues across the organisation.

For the past ten years, the RSPCA has been the only animal welfare organisation to have an officer dedicated to advising, supporting and working with local authorities in England and Wales.

The aim of the pages on this microsite is to provide a resource for local authority politicians, managers and operational staff providing information on some of the current issues within animal welfare.

Over time this resource will grow to cover a range of issues and showcase some of the good practice that is being conducted by both local authorities and other public facing bodies, such as registered social landlords (RSLs) across the two countries.
